چکیده

The hygroscopicity of mineral aerosol samples has been examined by three independent methods: diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, thermo-gravimetric analysis and differential mobility analysis. All three methods allow an evaluation of the water coverage of two samples, CaCO 3 and Arizona Test dust, as a func-5 tion of relative humidity. For the first time, a correlation between absolute gravimetric measurements and the other two (indirect) methods has been established. Water uptake isotherms were reliably determined for both solids which at 298 K and 80% relative humidity exhibited similar coverages of ∼4 monolayers. However, the behaviour at low relative humidity was markedly different in the two cases, with Arizona Test Dust show-10 ing a substantially higher affinity for water in the contact layer. This is understandable in terms of the chemical composition of these two materials. The mobility analysis results are in good accord with field observations and with our own spectroscopic and gravimetric measurements. These findings are of value for an improved understanding of atmospheric chemical processes.

Chemical and photochemical reactions on mineral oxide surfaces in gaseous and liquid phases: environmental implications of fate, transport and climatic impacts of mineral dust aerosol

Mineral dust aerosols emitted from the Earth crust during various natural and anthropogenic processes continuously alter the chemical balance of the atmosphere via heterogeneous processes and thus, impact on the global climate. Understanding of heterogeneous chemistry and photochemistry on mineral dust has become vital to accurately predict the effect of mineral dust loading on the Earth’s atmo...

Particle Size Controls on Water Adsorption and Condensation Regimes at Mineral Surfaces

Atmospheric water vapour interacting with hydrophilic mineral surfaces can produce water films of various thicknesses and structures. In this work we show that mineral particle size controls water loadings achieved by water vapour deposition on 21 contrasting mineral samples exposed to atmospheres of up to ~16 Torr water (70% relative humidity at 25 °C). Submicrometer-sized particles hosted up ...

A laboratory study of the heterogeneous uptake and oxidation of sulfur dioxide on mineral dust particles

[1] The heterogeneous uptake and oxidation of SO2 on particle surfaces representative of mineral dusts found in the atmosphere have been investigated. These particles include metal oxides (e.g., hematite, corundum), calcite, and China loess. FT-IR spectroscopy was used to characterize surface-bound species following exposure to gaseous SO2. It was found that SO2 irreversibly adsorbs as sulfite ...

Effect of Pre-harvest Foliar Application of Polyamines and Calcium Sulfate on Vegetative Characteristics and Mineral Nutrient Uptake in Rosa hybrida

In order to improve the quality of cut rose ‘Dolce Vita’, an investigation was performed with 20 treatments, 3 replications, and 2 plants in each replicate in a greenhouse with the open soilless culture system. The treatments included control (distilled water), putrescine (Put) at the rates of 1, 2 or 3 mM, spermidine (Spd) at the rates of 0.5, 1 or 1.5 mM, spermine (Spm) at the rates of 1, 2 o...

An Experimental Study of OH Uptake by Surfaces of Tropospheric Importance under Dry and Wet Conditions

The effect of relative humidity (RH) on OH uptake by surfaces of tropospheric importance was investigated. Due to diffusion limitation conditions, experiments were performed with parallel reactors packed with beads and using a surface dilution technique. A virtual cylindrical reactor approximation was developed to further quantify and confirm the reaction probability of OH for the surfaces of i...
